Trail Mix

I have a few blocks finished so up on the empty design wall they go.  This is a long-term project so I know I can’t leave them up…I just wanted an idea of how my colors and scraps are looking.  The trail can turn any which way.  This should be a fun project.  The blocks are fun to make, so simple and some a little more involved but everything is straight, no HSTs or flying geese.trail mix 002

There are a group of quilters on the Yahoo Stashbuster Group doing this pattern, some as leader ender, and a few just building the necessary blocks. A lot of conversation on color mix and fabric selection.  I’ve dug out fat quarters and some pre-cuts to get a good variety of color.  I plan on leader ender now that I have a few blocks started.  It should be easy to keep the working box near my machine while piecing another project.

The Trail Mix pattern can be found in American  Patchwork and Quilting (April 2004)or  Scrap-Lovers’ Quilts (Leisure Arts #4147) (Better Homes & Gardens Creative Quilting Collection).   There are a couple of wonderful scrappy quilts I’m thinking I should make next.

Thread tales, useless chatter!

For the last several years I have saved my thread spools so that I could tally my usage, then donate my empties to the local school for crafty stuff.  This years’ collection is pretty sparse, not because I didn’t sew much…I did!  Here’s 2012:

A good year .

17,767 yards! or 53,301 ft   or 639,612 inches.

That’s 10.0948 miles.

OK, here is 2013…..

thread 002  Pretty paltry…7,275 yards.  21,825 feet or 261,900. inches….barely 4 miles!

I’ve changed how I buy thread.  I love Aurifil, the orange spools above, my machine loves it too, as well as the sewing machine Doctor.  I have trouble finding it locally.

Last Spring I started using Masterpiece also a really nice smooth running thread.  2500 yards on that spool or rather cone, and my next favorite is So Fine by John Flynn with a whopping 3280 yards.  It takes a long time to empty the Aurifil, I’m guessing it will take over a year for the Masterpiece.

thread 001

The long arm is currently threaded with Omni…..6000 yards…..I won’t be emptying that anytime soon.

While using that thread, I completed 24 quilts or projects  this year.  Ten from my UFO list and 14 that  were started and finished in 2013.   Of these, 10 were kid size averaging 45 X 60 inches.  I had several table runners, they make such nice gifts.  and the remaining 8 were bed quilts or oversized couch throws.

That leaves me a very manageable 15 UFOs to start 2014…..and a box I am calling “Spare Parts”.   Right now my spare parts box has several 4 patches, some strip sets, a half-dozen leftover 9 patches and one star block that didn’t make the cut.  It will evolve into something, I hope, eventually.

Clock is ticking down….here’s hoping everyone has a successful New Year!

Design Wall 12-30-2013

006Yes, I know this a not a wall.  My wall is rather empty because I finished getting Towne Square together.  It is now in the R2Q (ready to quilt) pile.  I need to load a top and quilt since almost all of my UFOs are ready to be quilted.  Instead I am playing with Trail Mix.

I have 3 project boxes involved in the Trail Mix project, my scraps, fat quarters and 4 inch strips in the largest, and parts in the other two smaller ones.  I have about 25 blocks assembled….several of each one.  I have a lot of small 4 patches and quite a few 9 patch blocks.  I don’t want to even think about putting this on the wall until I have about 3/4 of the blocks finished…maybe September?

Meanwhile I can play while I decide on which project will go up on the wall…, really I need to load a quilt on the long arm.

Stash Report, Final Reckoning 2013

Already!!  Another year, how can that be?  Seems like just last month we were sharing plans and dreams for all that would be accomplished in 2013, and now, here we are on the eve (well, almost) of 2014.   It was a good year, 2013.  (maybe not as good as last year but a good year).  OK, all that was started was not finished, and yes, there are still several UFOs from years gone by that are still waiting for completion.  Even so, I’m happy with all I did get finished.

In the past few weeks I have added 3 charm packs to the stash.  I just cannot seem to pass up those great deals at Mo* Quilt Co.  I did manage to off set those purchases with a few last-minute gifts.

The wine totes are from a tutorial from Needle and Spatula.  They make a nice gift and are easy to make.  The smaller table runner is a UFO from 200?…..I found it in the Christmas box while scouting out fabric for the wine totes.  The snowman runner is new from Mo Star Quilt Co….sort of.  My version is smaller.

So here it is, my final report for 2013:

Acquired this week: 2 yards…that would be 3 charm packs over the last 3 weeks.

Acquired year to date…125.38 yards

Used since last report……1.5 yards  for a few Christmas gifties.

Used year to date…..149.  yards

In the black  23.63 yards.  Yeah!! finished in the black!  In spite of my daily look at the daily deal.

Design Wall

Nope, not the wall, this is in the que for the long arm.  I have the same quilt on the wall as last week but my attention has shifted to getting them quilted!

Cathedral Stars is all ready to go complete with backing and binding.   Cabin Window needs backing, but the binding is ready to go.  My sunroom is just a little cool this morning,  maybe this afternoon I’ll get started.

Stash Report # 49

I was productive this past week and finished binding two quilts!  The first is the flannel baby quilt.

I took a little short-cut and finished the binding by machine.  If I go slow enough it is OK.  I really prefer hand binding.  It is just more relaxing and great busy work in front of the TV.

My second finish is a really scrappy log cabin…sort of an anything goes scrappy.  Great for using up those odds and ends, and I have two bins of narrow strips (one light, one dark) to use up.

I have been making these blocks six at a time in between other projects and already have 60 blocks for the next one.  My plan is to try many different layouts using the same block.  This one is Sunshine and Shadow, and will go to the Sisters of Humility homeless project.

So, to the numbers…..this is a good week…nothing in and lots out!!

Acquired this week: 0 yards….nothing at all!!  Well, two new books ordered, but no fabric!

Acquired year to date…123.38 yards

Used since last report……18.75 yards (3.25 for baby (42 X 52) 15.5 for S & S (90 X 74)

Used year to date…..147.50  yards

In the black  24.13yards.

Stash Report # 48

I received my latest order from The Missouri Star Quilt Company so I have something to report, nothing going out, darn it, but I did get a small UFO quilted but not yet bound.

I have to add one charm pack ( 2/3 yard?)and a 2 yards companion piece, the border perhaps……

Week 48

Acquired this week: 2.66 yards

Acquired year to date…123.38 yards

Used since last report……0 yards…although I have a near completion

Used year to date…..128.75  yards

Still in the black….barely hanging on, 5.38 yards.  I would love to finish the year in the black but how can I ignore those daily deals that are really great deals???

Please check out more Stash reports at Judy’s Patchwork Times.
